7-Step Energy Guide to Moving Home


There’s a lot to organise when you’re moving home. Whether you’re a moving out of your parents’ home for the first time or a regular mover, it can all seem a little daunting.

We’d like to help you to save yourself some worry (and money) by explaining what to do about the energy at your new property. Here’s the to do list:


1. Before you move

If you were the bill payer at your last property, make sure you let your supplier know you’re leaving. You’ll want to give them

meter readings and a forwarding address, so they can send you an accurate final bill.


2. Find your meters

Finding energy meters in a new home can be tricky because they’re often hidden away. Some good places to look include the backs of cupboards, under the stairs, and outside. If you have both gas and electricity, you’ll have two separate meters, often in completely different locations.


3. Check your meters

Once you’ve found them, give them a once over. If you notice anything suspicious or potentially faulty about your meter, please report this straight away. An emergency engineer will come out straight away to assess the issue and make your meters safe again.

4. Take meter readings

Regular meter readings are the only way to make sure that you’re only charged for the energy that you use, not what the previous occupants used.

We would recommend taking a photograph of your meter readings as soon as you move in.


5. Find out who the current supplier is

If you don’t already know who the supplier is, you could wait for a letter to come through the door. This might take 6 months or longer and during this time you’ll be on the supplier’s standard tariff which is usually their most expensive.

Alternatively, it takes just one phone call to your regional electricity distributor to find out your electricity supplier. If you’re not sure who that is, just enter your postcode on the Energy Networks website.

Your gas supplier is usually the same as your electricity supplier. You can ask your electricity supplier to confirm this, and they’ll be able to tell you exactly who your gas supplier is, if this is different.


6. Contact the current supplier

You should contact your supplier to let them know you’re using their energy. You should tell them your contact details, your meter readings, and the date you became responsible for the property. Ask about the best deal they can offer you and make a note of this (including tariff rates). Ask about how they would bill you, and how you would be able to pay.

7. Choose a supplier and tariff

You don’t have to stay with the current supplier! That’s true even if you’re renting. So, see what’s out there to find the best deal for you.

In a new home, you won’t know exactly how much energy you’ll use each year, in terms of kWh per year. Suppliers and comparison tools will try to estimate this by asking you some questions about your home but if you want to be certain you’re getting a good deal, you’ll want to compare the tariff details, instead of just the suggested monthly payments.

Tariff details include a price per day and a price per kWh. Check how long these prices will last, and what it would cost to end the contract early if you wanted to.
