From NYC to London: Alicia’s Decade of Reinvention, Risk and Reward.
Meet Alicia, our Customer Marketing Manager. Ten years ago, Alicia worked in a different industry and lived in a different country. In the last decade, Alicia’s life has changed dramatically, and not just because she moved across the Atlantic. Read more about Alicia’s journey below.
Ten years ago, I was sitting in a tech PR agency in New York City as an executive. On paper, things looked great: I had the job, the fast-paced career, and was living in the city that so many dream of calling “home”. But inside, I was burnt out. I was staring down the barrel of a quarter-life crisis, feeling like I’d climbed the wrong mountain. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew it wasn’t this.
So, I did something drastic. I packed my bags and moved to London.
What was supposed to be a three-month break turned into something much bigger. The idea was to travel, maybe break into the film industry as a producer, and (if I’m being honest) live out my own version of a romantic British rom-com. It sounds cliché, but I was striving to become the metaphorical main character of my own life. And, somehow, it kind of worked.
At the time, I couldn’t imagine what life might look like a decade ahead. The most I could visualise was two or three years. I pictured myself in London, hopefully working somewhere that felt fulfilling and that gave me the space to create, grow, and keep feeding that constant sense of wanderlust I’ve never quite shaken.
I never saw myself in the energy industry, or marketing for that matter, but here I am, and I’ve never felt more aligned with what I value. I’m not making films, but I am telling stories that matter, working alongside people who listen, collaborate and care. And on a personal note, what of that vague hope for love and connection? It came true. I'm married now, with an 18-month-old and living in a cute terrace in London.
I joined So Energy only a few months ago, but it's already been a fun ride. The energy industry is more complex than I ever imagined. It’s not just about tariffs and bills, it’s about how we live, how we consume, and how we can change things for the better if we’re willing to try. Sustainable living always sounded good in theory, but here, I’ve seen how possible it is when you have the motivation and the right people around you.
What’s struck me most since joining is how much room I’ve had to bring ideas to the table. I’ve felt trusted as an expert in my space, and I’ve had the chance to collaborate with people who are open to new perspectives. That’s rare – and it’s something I don’t take for granted. These few months have also reminded me just how far I’ve come in my career. Not in titles or promotions, but in the way I understand people, how I trust my instincts, and how I set boundaries to protect my energy and focus on what matters.
If there’s one thing the last ten years have taught me, it’s that life isn’t linear and that’s okay. I’ve learned to assess risk, stay grounded in my values, and listen to that inner voice, even when it’s pulling me in an unexpected direction. That voice led me out of burnout, across the Atlantic, into new industries, and eventually into So Energy.
So much of life is uncertain. Ten years ago, I couldn’t have written this story even if I tried. But I’m so glad it’s the one I’ve ended up living.
A lot can change in 10 years, but So Energy’s commitment to helping our customers live a more sustainable life hasn’t. And that makes me proud to be an Energist.
