10 Years of So Energy: Building a Greener Future Together

Meet Simon and Charlie, the co-founders of So Energy. What started as a bold idea in 2015, to fix a broken energy market and make sustainable energy simple, has grown into a decade-long journey of innovation, partnerships, and purpose. In this blog they reflect on the challenges, milestones, and moments that shaped So Energy, and share why the next ten years hold even greater promise for a fairer, greener future.

When we started So Energy ten years ago in 2015, the energy market was broken. Prices were high, service was poor, and there was no clear vision for how customers would be supported through the energy transition. We knew things had to change, and we believed we could make that happen.

Our idea felt simple: put customers first, make energy easier, and accelerate the shift to net zero. Fair pricing and great service were non-negotiable.  

Fast forward ten years, and today, we serve around 300,000 customers across Great Britain and are continuing to grow through innovation and hard work. We built our own tech platform, Nova. We launched So Unique – the UK’s first truly personalised energy tariff. We’ve worked hard to stay ahead, giving customers more control, convenience and confidence. And we’re bringing that same mindset into the next era of energy.  

As we celebrate our first big anniversary, we have to recognise the huge part our partners have played in our journey. Joining forces with ESB in 2021 was a pivotal moment for us. Their decades of experience and shared values strengthened our ability to grow and innovate. Beyond ESB, we’ve teamed up with great partners across the industry to bring real benefits to customers and help drive a greener future.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without our people. Our inclusion in The Sunday Times Best Places to Work list in 2024 and 2025 is something we’re deeply proud of. Not because of the accolade itself, but because it reflects the culture we’ve created together. A high-trust, positive and inclusive workplace makes So Energy a great place to work – and helps us deliver better service and attract the talent we need for the exciting next chapter.

Looking ahead, the energy landscape is becoming more complex and decentralised, but our focus remains the same: making sustainable energy simple and accessible for everyone. We’re investing in digital transformation, expanding low-carbon technologies, and continuing to campaign for initiatives like a Social Tariff to tackle fuel poverty. We believe that reaching net zero isn’t just a national target, it’s a shared responsibility, and together, we know we have the power to make it happen.

So, to our people, partners, and, most importantly, our customers, we only have one thing left to say - thank you! The past decade has been full of change, and the next one promises even more opportunity. Whether you’ve been with us from the start, or joined along the way, we can’t wait to see what we achieve together in this next chapter.
