10 Years of So Energy: Jason's Story

From Centre Stage to Spreadsheets: Jason's 10-Year Journey

Meet Jason, our Head of Talent. Ten years ago, Jason traded in ballet shoes for a briefcase and hasn’t looked back. His unique journey to recruitment allows him to look beyond someone’s CV and recognise their potential, helping us hire the best and brightest for the last four years. Read more about Jason’s journey below.

Ten years ago, my life looked very different. My professional dancing career had just ended abruptly, and I found myself standing at a crossroads – one I hadn’t anticipated reaching so soon. I’d spent most of my life training for a future in the performing arts, so letting go of that dream wasn’t just a career change; it felt like losing a part of who I was.

But I wasn’t quite ready to walk away from dance completely. I kept one foot in the world I loved, working as a choreographer and performer for special events. One of my proudest moments during that time was being commissioned to create several pieces in partnership with Rethink Mental Health for a fundraising banquet. It reminded me that creativity could still be a force for good in the world, even if I wasn’t on stage every night.

While I was exploring what my future might hold, I dipped into a few different industries. I tried my hand at hospitality and even sold haute horology – yes, that’s fine watches, and yes, it was just as fancy as it sounds. But it was recruitment that stuck. Like many people in the industry, I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a recruiter. It just happened. I started at a large agency and began building a career I hadn’t planned for, but one I was really starting to enjoy.

That September also marked another major milestone – I went on a first date with someone who, as it turns out, would later become my wife. Back then, I didn’t have a clear picture of where I wanted to be in ten years. I assumed I’d be doing something creative, but I hadn’t really thought about whether I’d be a husband, a father, or living outside of London.

Fast forward to today, and here I am married for five years, with two brilliant little ones (aged four and two), living in Bath. These days, I spend more time in spreadsheets than on stage, and I genuinely love it.

I joined So Energy in January 2021 on a 12-month fixed-term contract as a Talent Acquisition Partner. I had no idea at the time how much I would grow here. Today, I lead the Talent function as Head of Talent, and I’ve had the privilege of watching both the business and my role evolve.

When I first joined, I couldn’t even read my own energy bill, let alone explain the inner workings of an energy supplier! But So Energy has a culture of inclusion and curiosity, and I’ve been able to learn from every part of the business. Whether it’s understanding how the Tech team builds new tools or what makes our Operations teams run smoothly, I’ve learned what makes So Energy tick. And that helps me hire the right people to keep our momentum going.

What’s struck me most is how complex and crucial the energy sector is. I always knew Net Zero was important, but I didn’t grasp the scale of the challenge until I saw it up close. Working at So Energy has shown me that meaningful change doesn’t just happen in government buildings or boardrooms, but every day, through the small, consistent actions of people who care. Being part of a company that’s helping drive that transformation is incredibly rewarding.

Looking back, I can see how the last ten years have shaped who I am. My dance background taught me resilience, creativity, and the value of hard work, all of which I’ve brought into this chapter of my life. Becoming a partner taught me the value of time, how to make the most of it, and the importance of pausing to enjoy the small but meaningful moments. And becoming a parent? That turned everything up a notch. Life is on fast-forward, but in the best way.

Ten years ago, the only XLOOKUP I knew was the "X" I was looking for on stage to hit my mark. Now, I work in an environment that champions learning, encourages growth, and celebrates people for who they are and who they’re becoming.

At So Energy, I've learned that great employee experiences lead to great customer experiences. We believe that when our people are happy, supported, and growing, our customers can feel it. That’s how I can confidently say that I know a lot can change in 10 years, but So Energy’s commitment to our customers hasn’t. And that makes me proud to be an Energist.
